Reptiles are a true labour of love!?!

Owning and caring for a reptile can be both rewarding and educational. There’s no denying they make very interesting pets, but if you want a fulfilling and long lasting experience as a reptile owner, you need to take the time and effort to learn about what's involved before you purchase or accept a reptile.

A reptile in captivity depends on its owner completely. While it may have natural defences, it is still basically helpless and unable to care for itself making every element of care equally important. Reptiles are cold-blooded and so unable to make their own body heat, which is why it is hard for them to move around if the temperature isn't right in their environment.

A successful
terrarium should be set up with a proper heat source for temperature perfection, and installing a thermostat will ensure the correct temperature at all times. Reptiles also need a basking lamp to sunbathe and a light tube for ultraviolet rays.

Remember any reptile will bite or scratch if it feels threatened or frightened so always make sure your tetanus shots are up to date just in case!!! Caring for your reptile should be a rewarding and fun experience for both of you, but it does require long term commitment as many reptiles will outlive cats and dogs.
