The diabetes epidemic hitting the pet world!!

As with people, the incidence of diabetes diagnosed in cats and dogs is on the increase. Although diabetes was not so much of a problem in past decades, it now affects as many as one in fifty animals – especially pudgy pets.

Research has shown that pet obesity is on the rise, and type one and type two diabetes is also rising right alongside it. Of course, not every dog or cat that develops diabetes is fat, but anyway you look at it, obesity and diabetes are linked. The good news is that pet obesity is preventable and reversible, and often so is the diabetes. In fact, in almost all cases diabetes is a preventable disease if your pet maintains a normal weight.

So, how can you tell if your pet is suffering from the early stages of diabetes? A couple of warning signs to look out for are if they start to drink an unusual amount of water, if they urinate much more frequently, or if your pet starts to eat ravenously but still loses weight. If you notice any of these signs, it is always advisable to take your dog or cat to the vet for a check up.

Like humans, cats and dogs need to eat a healthy balanced diet to stay healthy. An average ten pound cat needs to consume approximately 275 calories a day, while dogs will eat less often than cats, but consume larger meals.
